The planned Wiarton "Big Dig" just got bigger.
The Big Dig on Wiarton's Berford Street will extend from Division Street to Elm Street.
A section of the street from Mary to Elm was not in the original proposal but South Bruce Peninsula Council, at its September 3rd meeting, decided to add it so pretty well all of Berford would be done.
Mayor Janice Jackson says everyone is excited to get the work underway, calling it "a game changer" for Wiarton.
The project will likely begin next Spring but a lot of behind-the-scenes work is already underway.
Mayor Jackson says they have two years to complete the work under terms of the Connecting Links grant money they received from the Province.
The Big Dig is estimated to cost 7.3-milllion-dollars, less the 3-million from the province and the just over 2.4-million the municipality has in reserves.
That still leaves just over 1.8-million-dollars which Jackson says will likely be debentured.
Before any Big Dig begins, the mayor says a public meeting on the project will be held to get comments from stakeholders and the general public.
