Saugeen Shores Police say they have recently received several complaints about people breaking rules at the town’s harbours and beach areas.
Police say groups of youths have been seen swimming in the boat channel leading to Lake Huron from the Port Elgin Harbour.
Officers say the channel is narrow and can be heavily navigated by vessels at times, making it a dangerous place for anyone to swim.
Police say the area is well signed making it clear swimming is prohibited. They add, fishing is also not allowed in the Port Elgin Harbour area.
Officers have also reportedly received complaints about people barbecuing and drinking alcohol on the beach.
Police note, having a BBQ is prohibited on all Saugeen Shores community beaches, but using a charcoal BBQ is permitted in designated areas and open liquor is prohibited anywhere outside of a residence, private place or licenced establishment or area in Ontario.
Another common call police say they’ve been responding to is the use of fireworks on the beach which they say is prohibited in Saugeen Shores with certain exemptions for designated holidays, but those only apply to private residences.
Saugeen Shores police say officers will be assigned to proactively patrol these areas to ensure compliance, adding violators could face enforcement action under municipal by-laws, Liquor Licence Act and Trespass to Property Act.
Police add, “These rules and laws are in place to ensure everyone’s lawful and safe enjoyment of the best Saugeen Shores has to offer.”
