Ontario’s Finance Minister is apologizing for taking a Caribbean vacation amid the province-wide lockdown.
Rod Phillips left for St. Barts on December 13th and is still there, despite provincial guidelines asking that Ontarians only travel if absolutely necessary.
Phillips said in a statement yesterday that the trip was “previously planned” and he is making plans to return to Ontario immediately.
Upon his return, Phillips will begin his 14-day quarantine.
Premier Doug Ford said in a statement last night, “I have let the minister know that his decision to travel is completely unacceptable and that it will not be tolerated again — by him or any member of our cabinet and caucus.”
Ford also said he was “extremely disappointed” in Phillips’ decision.
It's #ChristmasEve. To my constituents in #Ajax & people across Ontario, all the best during this special time of year. Even as COVID-19 changes how we celebrate, we should reflect on what makes Christmas so special to us – including family & the act of giving. #MerryChristmas! pic.twitter.com/AX7hKWA88n
