An expanded child care centre is coming to Durham and the reaction from residents has been one of relief.
Rob Cummings, Superintendent of Business Services for the Bluewater District School Board, tells the board’s Business Committee on March 2nd, the facility will be located next to Spruce Ridge Community School in Durham.
Cummings says the stand-alone building will have 39 spaces which includes a toddler and pre-school aged room as well as outside play areas for both age groups.
He says that’s 19 more spaces than currently exist by Durham Kids & Us that operates next to the school.
The trustee responsible for that area, Tracy Lynn Atkinson, says it’s been a long time coming and people are pretty excited.
Atkinson says she’s received lots of emails and phone calls from young parents wanting to know if it’s true.
Bluewater District School Board originally received $1.05 million in funding for a new child care to be placed at Spruce Ridge Community School in Durham.
Then during an online announcement, Minster of Education Stephen Lecce confirmed additional funding of $485,415 bringing the project total to just over
$1.5 million.
It’s been several years since the plan was first being discussed.
