West Grey Council has selected its path forward for the construction of a new police station in Durham.
Council resolved on Tuesday to move ahead with an $8.8-million project that meets architects’ recommendations, one of four options that was considered for the new build.
The current police station is nearing the end of its life span and does not meets the current requirements of the Police Services Act.
West Grey Mayor Christine Robinson confirmed that council decided to pursue the second option recommended by the architects that would accommodate and enhance the local police force as well as the future growth of the community, “the building is planned to accommodate the needs now and for the future.”
Set to sit at around 15,000 square feet, Robinson says the new station, “is an important investment as it ensures we are equipped for the needs of the community.”
The current estimated date for the building to be completed, according to Robinson, is the fall of 2022.
With the design already approved by council from the architectural firm Formworks Architects, council was informed about the costing options of building code requirements, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building, and a facility that would be eligible to apply for grant funding with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The four options council considered were:
-a design to meet the minimal code and legislated requirements, $8,650,000
-a design to meets the architects’ recommendations, $8,852,241
-a design to meet LEED certification, between $8,909,500 to $9,515,000
-a design to meet NetZero (allowing to be eligible for grant funding), $10,250,000
