The Municipality of West grey is receiving over $300,000 in provincial funding to help complete the replacement of the Garafraxa St. box culvert in Durham.
The funds came through the Ministry of Transportation’s 2021-22 Connecting Links Program.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, who announced the funding says, “This is great news for West Grey and our entire community. Connecting Links roads and bridges are vital links that connect people to jobs, support the movement of goods and create economic growth across Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound and the entire province.”
The funding was made possible through the Ontario government’s $30 million investment to assist 14 municipalities with their work in repairing roads and bridges through the program.
Having received the funds, the municipality will be able to use it to go towards the design, construction, renewal, rehabilitation and replacement of municipal roads.
Through the provincial governments investment, according to the release, up to 90 per cent of of eligible project costs will be able to be obtained by the municipality, up to a maximum of $3 million for the road project. Based on the municipal feedback however, starting in 2021-22, that limit of $3 million has been upped to $5 million to, “to reflect the higher costs of maintaining and repairing bridges compared to roads.
Walker notes, “I am pleased to see our government has raised the maximum amount for bridge projects to $5 million. This will come as welcome news to municipalities with Connecting Links roads,”
Should the municipality need, they will be able to apply for the 2022-23 Connecting Links Program later this year.
