Now is not the time to relax measures in the fight against Covid-19.
It’s a common statement and one that was heard again as the Ontario Vaccination Support Council, presented Dr. Ben Chan in a webcast.
The assistant professor at the University of Toronto in the Global Heath and Health Policy division, was out grocery shopping the other day and did an unscientific survey of how many people were following covid protocols.
He says in the store he was in, 85% were following the rules
Chan says 85% is terrific as a mark in school but “the problem is Covid a really hard marker,” and 85% just isn’t good enough.
He says it represents a 15% error rate and then asks “Would you put up with a 15% error rate from your ATM?”
Chan had a familiar answer when it came to shopping around for a vaccine of choice.
He says the risk of waiting around for the vaccine of choice could create a high risk problem down the road.
Chan urges people to get whatever vaccine is offered as soon as they can.
He’s aware of the talk about Astra Zenica but he states you take more of a risk driving your car than getting that particular vaccine.
Chan says throughout the province, a lot of surgeries and services have been put on the back burner as everyone fights Covid.
If and when Covid is overcome, he believes it will take up to 18-months to play catch-up on other hospital procedures that have been put on hold.
The webcast was put on by the Ontario Vaccination Support Council, founded by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, co-chaired by James Scongack, Executive-Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Operational Services at Bruce Power and Garrick Tiplady, the Managing Director of Facebook Canada.
The Council leverages over 250 organizations from across the province to provide support for Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccination effort with the ultimate goal of ending the pandemic.
