Grey Highlands Council has approved five infrastructure and commercial projects worth over $1 million.
During its council meeting on May 18, council approved several tender awards and grants local business improvements.
$40,509 was awarded to C & G Concrete to undertake 200 meters of sidewalk replacements on the western side of Grey Road 13, from Centre Road to Creamery Road in Kimberley.
A council report notes the 2021 budget set aside $82,000 for sidewalk replacements, $50,000 of which is reserved for contracted services. The bid placed by C & G Concrete falls within the budget placed and $32,000 will be used for operational sidewalk replacements and repair works pending the results of annual sidewalk inspections.
The project is expected to be completed by September.
Council also approved a tender of close to $23,000 awarded to J. A. Porter Holdings for the purchasing of high density polyethylene (HDPE) culverts.
Over $1 million was approved in the tender awarded to Cox Construction Limited for three paving schedules and over $47,000 to the same company for provisional items.
Included in the 2021 capital projects, the paving will be split into three portions:
– 10th Concession from Road 63 to Grey Road 124, 4.1 kilometres
-Artemesia-Glenelg Townline from West Back Line to Pinewood Drive, 2.9 kilometres
-Road 63 from 3rd Concession to Centre Line B, 2.1 kilometres
In addition to approving the tender, council would also execute an agreement with the Municipality of West Grey to reimburse 50 per cent of the costs of the boundary road project while in schedule B, spread out over two years.
In the report, its notes West Grey’s portion of the work is expected to be funded through Gas Tax Funding. If an agreement was reached with the municipality, to start the work this year, Grey Highlands would cover the full costs from Transportation Reserves for the 50 per cent until payment was received from West Grey.
In addition to awarding tenders, council also approved the funding for two business upgrades in Markdale.
Up to $6,400 was approved for the restaurant Fire & Ice for building and facade improvements, as well as parking and property improvements.
The funding will be coming from the Building, Facade, and Signage Improvement Grant in order to repaint exterior wooden features and install eavestrough on the northern side of the building.
Lastly, council approved just over $4,000 for The Market Shoppe through the same grant as Fire and Ice, which will also undertake building and facade improvements, install new signage, offeset permit fees, and install a free standing hand sanitizer station.
