Town of the Blue Mountains council has approved an additional $140,000 in needed funding for the Thornbury Pier Resurfacing Project.
In a release, the town says due to the unexpected challenges following the removal of the pier’s concrete decking, the budget for the project is facing a cost increase. The project is now expected to now be finished by mid-August.
Based on the available drawings for the pier, built in the 1930’s, the concrete pad was shown to be just over one foot in thickness. But during the demolition process, the contractor found it it be about two feet thick and needed to perform additional removal work and use more materials for the work.
When the concrete was removed, the contractor also found there to be significant differences in the height of the sheet piling. Even though this was expected, it extended the whole width of the pier.
The pier reconstruction project started in May and with an initial allocation for the project set at over $412,000 included in the town’s 2020 budget.
High water levels in recent years has caused the matting to shift and be damaged past the point of reasonable maintenance and repair.
