It’s not etched in stone yet, but a revised traffic bylaw has been presented to Saugeen Shores councillors.
Most of council liked where some of the traffic proposals, speed limits and stop sign changes were going, but Councillor Dave Myette definitely did not. He says he was looking forward to the report but states he was “shocked at the extent to which it has gone.”
For one, Myette was not happy with the plan to reduce the speed limit within the built-up areas of the town to 40 kilometres an hour.
He says, “All this is going to do is frustrate drivers.”
Myette says some of the input to reduce speed comes from people who are sitting on their verandas and think the cars are going too fast.
He says he’s not going to point out any age bracket, “but it’s people with more time on their hands.”
Myette, chair of the Police Services Board, says the board will be meeting in special session on August 15th to determine how difficult it will be for police to enforce the speed limit changes throughout the region and to monitor new potential 4-way stop intersections.
The Director of Infrastructure and Development Services Amanda Froese, in partial response to Myette, indicated she has talked to Police Chief Kevin Zettel and he was in support of the 40 km/h speed limit throughout the town because some streets have two and three different speed limits on them.
Froese says the public has until Friday, September 3rd to make their views known on all aspects of the proposed traffic bylaw amendments that will be prepared for the final recommendations that will be forwarded to council for approval in September.
