Changes are finally coming to the traffic light-controlled intersection of Ivings Drive and Goderich Street in south Port Elgin.
For years now, motorists travelling north on Goderich Street at Ivings Drive, inevitably get caught behind vehicles trying to turn left onto Ivings Drive.
That annoyance could soon be cleared up.
Saugeen Shores council, on August 23rd, approved that E. C. King Contracting of Owen Sound be awarded the contract of just over $662,000 that will see the realignment of the intersection to put in a left turn lane for northbound traffic onto Ivings Drive.
Councillor Dave Myette says the change is a long-time coming.
In addition, Myette says this is a good example of changes that are being made that will add to the efficiency of the flow of traffic through Saugeen Shores.
Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt agrees with the change stating that at times motorists are cutting through the Circle K parking lot to avoid the light.
He says “It’s always been a problem intersection.”
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says with the build-up of subdivisions in Bluewater Estates to the west of the intersection, it will only result in more traffic using the intersection.
Director of Infrastructure and Development Amanda Froese says the project entails the installation of all new traffic control signals, poles, power supply and realignment of the curb and widening of asphalt.
Work will begin this September with completion expected by December.
The project was included in the 2021 Capital Budget, with a budgeted amount of $492,212.00 including HST, engineering and contingencies.
The project was designated an additional $43,911.00 in the prior year capital budget.
Staff have recommended that council allocate $290,000.00 from the Future Capital Reserve to fund the capital budget shortfall.
The province is also kicking in some cash under the Connecting Links program.
