The City of Owen Sound has completed remediation and repairs on the East Bayshore Trail.
Owen Sound Director of Public Works and Engineering Dennis Kefalas says the work which began in late spring, early summer wrapped up late last week.
Kefalas says after years of high water levels on the east side, especially the shoreline area close to the Best Western Hotel, there were signs of erosion issues.
“Especially when we had the storms coming out of the north and a lot of wave action, really we lost quite a bit of shoreline,” says Kefalas.
Kefalas notes, they enacted a plan to employ something more robust to protect the shoreline from any future erosion issue.
“We built this retaining wall with this big armour stone, two courses in the armour stone, and then in front of that, we actually put some what you would call blast rock or waste rock,” says Kefalas.
According to Kefalas, most of the work on the west side has already been completed, as they are just now waiting to pave the trails on both sides. He says he is hoping to have this finished within the next two weeks.
The budget for both the east and west side projects was set at $150,000, and Kefalas says they are waiting for the final invoice from the contractors.
“We are looking out for our city amenities and we want to make sure people have access and are able to use the trail network and take advantage of the beautiful, natural features of our community,” says Kefalas.
