The South Bruce OPP and Owen Sound Police Service is providing tips for a safe return to school this week.
Noting in a release, when students make their return to the classroom on Sept. 7, motorists are being reminded streets and sidewalks will once again become busy with students.
Police say as these young individuals may not always be focusing on the road, drivers are encouraged to be extra cautious.
Police note, school buses and crossing guards will be back on the roads and drivers should be prepared to make unanticipated stops. Failing to halt for a crossing guard with a portable sign carries a $180 fine, and passing a school bus while it has its red lights flashing will also cost drivers a $490 fine.
Owen Sound Police say over the coming weeks, they plan to focus traffic safety efforts on enforcement and education in school areas, including speeding, aggressive driving and distracted driving.
Police note the use of cell phones and other hand-held devices while driving is becoming an increasing cause of serious collisions.
Police say they will also be taking aim at illegal parking in the vicinity of schools, as parking in prohibited areas around these zones can create safety hazards by getting in the way of bus drop-off locations.
The OPP is encouraging all parents and caregivers to talk to their children this weekend about the importance of being safe while on their way to and from school.
