The Township of Huron-Kinloss is now allowing golf carts to operate on local roadways.
The township advises as of Sept. 7, as part of the golf cart pilot project with the Ministry of Transportation, only those with a mandatory registration permit are allowed to drive golf carts on roads within the jurisdiction of Huron-Kinloss.
The pilot will test the safe integration of golf carts on Ontario’s public roads. It would allow the MTO to assess if golf carts can safely integrate with other vehicles, and if existing rules of the road are adequate or if additional licencing and operating requirements may be needed to allow them on roads permanently.
South Bruce OPP say anyone planning on operating a golf cart in Huron-Kinloss must register it with the township first before driving it on the roadway.
Those looking to drive golf carts must have a valid Ontario drivers licence and they can’t drive it in December, January, February, or March. Golf carts will also not be able to tow other vehicles, or carry passengers under the age of eight.
Adequate night time lighting will be required and they must drive on the far-right lane.
Able to drive at a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour, Mayor Mitch Twolan says safety is the number one priority, and he is asking residents to operate their golf carts with care and courtesy at all times for the safety of residents and visitors.
“We look forward to the implementation of this pilot project and its support for economic development, climate change, tourism, and improvement to quality of life in our community as it helps to address accessible and alternative transportation options,” says Twolan.
