Enbridge Gas is partnering with local fire emergency services to improve home safety and reduce carbon monoxide-related deaths to zero.
The partnership includes the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services, the Inter-Township Fire Department, and the Chatsworth Fire Department.
This comes after Enbridge Gas invested $500,000 in Safe Community Project Zero this year, and provided over 68,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments in the past 13 years.
Through the project, Owen Sound Fire and the Inter-Township Fire Department received a combination of 180 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, while Chatsworth Fire received over 120.
Enbridge Gas Director of Southeast Region Operations Murray Costello says, carbon monoxide is known as the silent killed for a reason, and have proof that prevention saves lives.
When properly installed and maintained, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are able to provide an early warning to leave the home, as carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas, according to a release.
“We know that the best way to avoid carbon monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and that the alarms are a critical second line of defence to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning,” says Costello.
Owen Sound interim fire chief Will Plagenz says this donation of combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will help the residents who are in need of new or additional protection.
“Our department is very pleased to have received the alarms and look forward to working with Inter-Township Fire Department to deliver this life-saving initiative,” says Plagenz.
