South Bruce OPP is advising residents to be cautious of scams after receiving reports of attempts in the area.
Police say they have received reports of a “money for bail” scam.
The scam is conducted over the phone and the scammer informs the victim they are a police constable. The con artist tells them they know someone who is in custody and the bail has been set.
When the money is put together, the “bail” will then be collected by an unmarked courier.
Police say the OPP does not collect bail money, and they will not contact residents to make arrangement for bail payment.
According to OPP, modern, tech-savvy con artists have the ability to create very convincing scams and they will not hesitate to use the name of a legitimate company as a method to gain the victim’s trust and trick them into sending payments.
Police are recommending to always be cautious with unsolicited email, phone calls, letters, and visitors to your door, and to be certain you know who are dealing with before you consider sending money or personal information.
