Kincardine is partnering up with Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to launch a municipal housing survey.
The municipality says the survey will be used to better understand local housing needs and inform the development of a Housing Action Plan.
Mayor Gerry Glover says like many communities across Canada, they are dealing with an affordable and attainable housing crisis.
“Home prices continue to soar, and rental vacancy rates remain at an all-time low,” says Glover.
The municipality says the growth prompted by urban and rural migrations, Bruce Power’s Major Component Replacement project, and other factors are changing the local housing market.
Referencing 2021 Stats Canada data, the municipality adds the population of the area grew by 7.7 per cent since 2016.
Coun. Maureen Couture says there are several areas where they lack housing data, especially around rental and the types of housing people desire.
“The housing survey will fill in some of these data gaps and help to identify specific actions the municipality can take to address the local housing crisis,” says Couture.
Residents will be receiving a postcard in the mail over the net several days, and those interested in participating in the survey can visit the Kincardine municipal website or call 1-800-827-0676 x 1.
General Manager of Bruce CFDC Barb Fisher says they are pleased to support the municipality’s engagement efforts around this critical work.
Kincardine Community Economic Development Coordinator Cherie Leslie adds they need as many people as possible to complete the survey as this will guide the development of their Housing Action Plan and allow them to better plan for future growth.
