The Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association (BPSA) says it made history by released the largest trout from the club’s hatchery.
The BPSA says they released the 0.165 pound, nine inch brown trout into Colpoy’s Bay.
The association adds they had reached another milestone, as this was the first time this conservation group stocked fish through ice.
BPSA President Kevin Harders says it was very exciting as the water temperatures worked out for transferring the fish from the hatchery.
“It was another successful stocking of the brown trout that are fin clipped for identification purposes,” says Harders. “Our organization has worked hard for 60 years maintaining fish stocking in the waters of Colpoy’s Bay. This is just another highlight of what our club is all about, conservation.”
The BPSA says due to circumstances arising from the pandemic, they had extra space in the hatchery. This allowed the club’s volunteers to keep the brown trout longer than usual and grow the fish to reach, for the club, record sizes.
The association adds since the 60s, they have stocked more than four million rainbow and brown trout and salmon in Colpoy’s Bay. According to tourism officials, it is suggested the club’s efforts and region-wide sports fish stocking, has helped pump millions of dollars into the regional economy.
The BPSA says with the province transitioning into more normal times, the club is slowly resuming its usual schedule, and aims to soon release the date for their annual Spring Kids Fishing Derby.
