Bruce County Human Services was able to give a progress report this week on their 2021 Housing & Homelessness Plan.
So far this year, Phase 1 of the Affordable Housing Development Toolkit was completed and shared with developers.
The Director of Human Services, Christine MacDonald, says that they’re working with their findings from the first phase of their Affordable Housing Development Toolkit to help developers understand what the need is for the community.
“We’re supporting the path or stream for developers to create large multi-residential units as well as other types of housing to fill the gap of the middle market that we’re hoping to provide more units for in our Bruce County communities.”
MacDonald says that the pandemic shifted the needs of the community, namely because it changed how people lived and worked. This means that there was an increase in demand for units, but fewer units available.
“There are a number of people who are looking for places to live, and there aren’t enough places, and so we are trying to move forward as quickly as possible for new units, and make the process more seamless for people that are interested in building those new units.”
She also says that they have resources in place for anyone who needs shelter, which can be accessed by the Bruce County Human Services website, or by calling 211.
They’re now looking forward to Phase 2 of the Toolkit, which will be released this Fall.
