Owen Sound is raising an Every Child Matters Flag outside of city hall this morning.
The city says it’s in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The federal holiday on September 30, also known as Orange Shirt Day, serves as a day to understand the painful history and legacy of residential schools in Canada, and to hear the experiences and recognize the ongoing impacts to Indigenous, Inuit and Metis communities.
In July 2021, the federal government passed a bill to make Sept. 30 the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in response to a call to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
The city says this holiday also demonstrates a commitment to reconciliation and reminds that every child matters.
The flag will be raised today at 9:30 a.m. and will be up all month. The flag will also be displayed in the Owen Sound Council Chambers for all of September as well.
