Meaford is facing a claim for damages related to 14 properties in the municipality.
The municipality says the claim by Tarion, includes the properties on Gordon Crescent.
CAO Rob Armstrong was not able to provide many details, but confirmed the municipality was one of 16 defendants for a total claim of $8 million.
“It is a building code matter where Tarion, formerly Ontario New Home Warranty, is rectifying the homes and feel there is other people who need to share in the rectifying the certain homes within the development and have laid blame on a number of parties including the municipality,” says Armstrong.
The municipality could be liable for up to $700,000 in costs.
Clerk and Director of Community Services Matt Smith says due to the costs that may be incurred, the municipality believes it is important that candidates and electors are aware of this claim for damages.
“Council will be provided ongoing updates related to the claim from our lawyer as it progresses. These updates will be in closed session due to solicitor-client privilege. The municipality will make no further public comment on this matter,” says Smith.
Meaford says its insurance company is defending the claim and accepts no liability for the accusations included in the claim.
