The Salvation Army is looking for support going into the Thanksgiving season to help provide food for those in need.
Owen Sound Salvation Army Food Bank and Family Services Coordinator Alice Wannan says they are continuing with their food hampers this year and are looking for either food or monetary donations as they expect to see an increase in clients this week.
“We do see more of an increase this week and over the weekend, just because people who normally do okay just need that extra little bit of help over the Thanksgiving season,” says Wannan.
Wannan says last year they consistently served 500 to 600 people monthly, but saw an increase during the holiday season.
The Salvation Army will be handing out hampers of food to people in need, which contain non-perishable food items, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and meat.
The Salvation Army currently has a need for cereal, crackers, small jars of peanut butter, granola bars, and side dishes like boxed stuffing.
“Many of our businesses in town, our schools are collecting food and have challenges amongst each other, and as always, we are so thankful for monetary donations as that really allows us to fill the gap where we may be short on certain food items,” says Wannan.
Donations can be made by either visiting the Salvation Army in the city, or by going to any of their representatives at local grocery stores in Owen Sound.
