The Behavioural Support Team (BSO) at Brucelea Haven is marking 10 years of providing service at the long term care home in Walkerton.
Bruce County says in a release the team provides support to residents who are experiencing responsive behaviours, and also provide education and resources to staff to identify triggers to these behaviours as well as how to intervene with gentle approaches. The strategies help make a difference in the resident’s quality of life.
The long term care home’s priority, the county says, is providing non-pharmacological interventions to respond to the behaviours the individual are experiencing.
Some of these interventions include, sensory stimulation through aromatherapy and therapeutic touch, task-based activities, creative outlets, weighted blankets, and therapeutic cats and dogs.
The county says these team members undergo special training to offer ways of improving communications from staff to staff on what approaches work using person-centred care methods.
“When responsive behaviours arise, referrals for support are put in by the nursing staff for the BSO Team to assess and provide updates to the resident’s plan of care,” says the county.
Families are welcome to request referrals to the team and can continue to contact the Brucelea Haven Administrator with questions and concerns.
