Saugeen Shores will allow greater access for dogs on leashes on the Town’s beaches this summer.
Council approved a staff recommendation that leashed dog access be expanded to the beach area north of the flagpole in Southampton (north of High Street to the mouth of the Saugeen River) at any time of day between July 1st and October 1st.
In Port Elgin, leashed dogs will be allowed at off-peak times of day between 538 Izzard Road and Concession 6/Bruce Road 25. Dogs will be allowed before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Dogs will not be allowed on the beach during the day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Town staff say, in all cases, dogs must be leashed, under control and cleaned up after.
The decision comes after a public survey showed support for expanded access.
Staff will gauge impacts of the expansion over the summer through the monitoring of feedback and any complaints, with a report to council in the fall.
