Police have charged a West Grey man after a brief standoff.
Hanover Police say they were called to a family dispute around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday evening, and officers arrived on scene to find a “distraught, intoxicated” man had climbed some 70 feet up a hydro tower, armed with an axe.
“Officers determined the male was drinking from a bottle of liquor as he climbed,” Hanover Police say in a release. “The area was contained by Hanover and West Grey police officers while Grey County Paramedics, Hanover Fire Department and Hydro One personnel staged in the area for precautionary reasons.”
The OPP emergency response team and negotiators were called into assist, but the man ended up descending the tower on his own accord before they arrived. He was arrested and charged with weapons dangerous to public peace, mischief and breach of probation.
Police say Hydro One crews had to retrieve the axe from the tower, as it was left behind by the accused.
“There was no disruption to any hydro customers as a result of this incident,” police say.
