The community group looking to purchase the old Markdale Hospital appears to be out of time.
Affordable Housing In Grey Highlands, also known as AHIGH, was looking to submit another bid for the former Centre Grey General Hospital property, which was vacated in 2023 when the new Markdale hospital opened.
AHIGH’s previous bid fell through, with a conflict centred around an environmental study for the site, which had experienced and oil leak on Christmas Day, 2004.
The community group had told Bayshore News that once they had proof that the spill was properly mitigated based on the Ministry of Environment’s standards, then it would be confident submitting a new bid to purchase the property, while factoring in the cost to demolish the building.
Brightshores announced on Friday afternoon that the former Markdale hospital had been sold to a different buyer, saying that the proceeds of the sale would be re-invested into critical health infrastructure with a focus on improving services to the communities that it serves.
With the sale now complete the new property owner will be working with the Municipality of Grey Highlands on next steps.
