Guelph Police say two Grey County residents are facing several weapon related charges following a traffic stop.
Police say around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 10, an officer attempted to stop a car with an improper muffler in the area of Gordon Street and Harvard Road. The vehicle then sped away southbound, and out of interest for public safety, the officer did not pursue.
A Guelph Police detective driving in an unmarked car was in the south end, and saw the vehicle reverse into a parking spot at a plaza on Gordon Street south of Arkell Road.
Police say then several units attended and attempted to pin the vehicle in. The driver, however, was not compliant and at one point, drove at an officer, stopping just short of hitting them. The driver was extracted from the vehicle through the driver’s side window.
Police say when they entered the vehicle, officers immediately spotted a loaded sawed-off shotgun beside the drivers seat, with a shell in the chamber ready to fire.
According to police, three other loaded guns were found in the passenger area of the vehicle, and a further search revealed five more loaded guns in the trunk, with several edged weapons and quantity of illicit substances.
As a result, a 30-year-old Grey County man was charged with dangerous driving, fleeing from police, assaulting police, possessing a controlled substance, and over 60 firearms and prohibited weapons charges.
A 32-year-old Grey County woman was also charged with 23 firearms and prohibited weapons charges.
Both of the accused were held in custody and appeared in bail court on Saturday.
Guelph police did not provide the names of the accused.
