Owen Sound Police say a 45-year-old local man is facing numerous charges following the seizure of a large quantity of drugs.
Police say on Wednesday the Drug Enforcement Unit concluded its most recent drug trafficking investigation when it, and the Criminal Investigations Branch and other officers arrested the accused after initiating a traffic stop at the 1100 block of 3rd Avenue East.
Police say the accused was safely secured and officers proceeded to conduct two search warrants at residences. Police also searched four vehicles in Owen Sound.
As a result of the search, police they seized 127 grams of fentanyl, 33 grams of methamphetamine, and quantities of cocaine, heroin, oxycodone pills, $7,000 in cash, and a taser device.
Police say the estimated street value of the seizure was nearly $65,000.
Owen Sound Police have not identified the 45-year-old man they arrested.
According to police, the amount of fentanyl seized represents over 1,200 potentially lethal doses of the drug. The last Owen Sound victim to die from a suspected drug overdose was a 42-year-old woman on Jan. 16.
Police say the arrest on Tuesday was not the first for the accused as he was already on a release order with bail conditions after being charged in July 2020 for possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, when he was found to have 48 grams of the drug.
Police say the accused is now facing possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and oxycodone pills, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon going against a prohibition order, and failing to comply with his release order.
The accused was held for a virtual bail hearing on Tuesday and was then remanded into custody. He will appear in court again Friday.
Police say the opioid crisis across the province as well as locally is ongoing, with fentanyl continuing to be the largest contributor.
Community partners which include the Owen Sound Police have come together to work on drug harm reduction and the enforcement of those who are supplying.
