Pothole season has started in Owen Sound and staff are repairing damages across the city in priority areas.
The city says as the spring season gets closer, local roads are experiencing more extreme freeze-thaw cycles.
Potholes develop when water gets underneath the top layer of asphalt through cracks in the road. As the moisture freezes and expands, the weight of passing vehicles breaks the pavement.
During the winter months when temperatures are low and pavement is covered with snow and ice, potholes are temporarily fixed with cold mix asphalt to make the road more safe. Once the warmer weather comes in, more permanent repairs are done with hot asphalt.
The city is reminding drivers to be cautious and report areas of concern, and residents can help by reporting any potholes.
The city says depending on the location and weather, staff are able to repair potholes within a few days of receiving a report.
Residents can submit a pothole or any other road issue by filing a report form online or by calling 519-376-4274.
