Underserved homes and businesses in the Grey Bruce region will have high-speed internet access by the end of 2025.
A notice from the office of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Rick Byers says the government estimates there are over 13,000 underserved homes and businesses in Owen Sound, Grey Highlands, Meaford, Hanover, Chatsworth, Georgian Bluffs, Southgate, West Grey, South and North Bruce Peninsula.
Following a two-stage competitive process, four internet service providers, including Rogers and Xplornet, have signed an agreement with the province to bring high-speed internet access to these homes and businesses.
Byers says he will be providing feedback to the Ministry of Infrastructure to direct attention to additional parts of the community that need further investment.
“That 2025 timeline is something that we have identified as the goal where the job should be done, but I sure am going to want to make sure things move along as quickly as we can,” says Byers.
He says all during, before and since the campaign, he heard first hand that many homes, businesses, farms, and schools, need continual internet access.
Byers adds he is pleased the government is continuing to invest in local communities.
“We are committed to improving access to fast and reliable internet service that is so vital to our rural families and businesses,” says Byers.
This is part of a nearly $4 billion investment to bring access up to 266,000 underserved homes and businesses across the province, in as many as 339 municipalities.
