West Grey will be spending around $3,700 more per month to provide curbside waste collection in the municipality.
A report was brought forward by Infrastructure and Public Works Interim Director Brent Glasier about the increase recently.
The report says Waste Management (WM) approached the municipality to ask for an increase in monthly curbside collection costs to offset the inflationary costs beyond the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
For WM, disruptions in the supply chain for critical materials and equipment, labour shortages, and significant increase in maintenance and fuel costs have dramatically increased its cost to provide services in the municipality.
The increased costs can be partially mitigated through the unspent Normanby Landfill operating budget and through landfill reserves.
Deputy Mayor Tom Hutchinson also asks whether the municipality would increase the price of bag tags (currently $2 each) to offset the costs.
Director of Finance Kerri Mighton says it would be up to council to decide.
“It would need to be a by-law change if we did want to increase the bag tag fees,” says Mighton.
