Kincardine Council voted to update their IT policies, which led to some concerns from members of council.
Councillor Bill Stewart said that he was willing to agree with municipal staff being held to some standards, but said that the mayor and council shouldn’t have to.
“If we had to do an audit… or bring some sort of opinion to an outside party, this restricts us,” said Stewart during the discussion, adding, “And you have to go to the leadership group, which is the staff, to get permission. I can’t support that part. I would support the whole policy for employees, but I would remove the council members. Because I don’t think we really want to see us being criminally charged.”
Councillor Laura Haight explained to anyone who was unsure about the policy that it was similar to not using a work vehicle for personal use.
Councillors Dave Cuyler and Bill Stewart voted against the motion from the report, which would update the IT policies and hold the council responsible to lead by example.
