Grey Highlands council is supporting an application for provincial funding for two road infrastructure projects in Flesherton and Markdale.
During a council meeting on Oct. 5, a report was brought forward by Transportation and Public Spaces Coordinator Holly Cullihall. It recommended supporting the application to receive funding from the next round of funds from the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Links Program.
Should the application be successful, the municipality will fund its portion of the costs for the reconstruction of Highway 10 in Flesherton and Markdale.
The report says on Sept. 22, the launch of the next intake for the Connecting Links Program was announced, which provides $30 million in 2023-24 to help municipalities for the construction and repair of roads and bridges on connecting links.
This funding from the ministry covers up to 90 per cent of total eligible project costs, with a max of $3 million per road project.
Applications for the funding must be submitted by Nov. 16.
The report adds any municipality that has more than one designated connecting link, may submit a max of two projects a year, and staff are recommending those in Flesherton and Markdale.
If the municipality receives funding through the program, Grey Highlands will be able to issue a tender in spring 2023, with construction to follow in the summer, and substantial completion by the end of December.
The Markdale project is estimated to cost $5.5 million, and $3.6 million for Flesherton.
Funding recommendations for the municipality’s portion will be included in the 2023 budget.
