It’s the time of year when we will be attend parties and get togethers, many of which will be Pot Luck style. We have one coming up for our office next week!
Do you have a tried and true dish that you always bring? What is it?
Here are a few things that you should NOT bring:
1. Baked potatoes in aluminum foil. When the potatoes cool down, the moisture and steam in the foil can create a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. You can use foil to bake the potatoes, just remove it before it cools down.
2. Mayo-based salads. Potato salad, egg salad, and macaroni salad are common choices, but unless you can know that your salad will be kept at a cool temperature, you should skip it because it could end up making people sick.
3. Fish and seafood. Not only can they spoil easily at room temperature, it’s also a risk for people with allergies, plus it will stink up the space!
4. Nuts. It’s another one that’s bad for people with allergies. If a dish calls for sprinkling almonds or peanuts to finish the dish, consider leaving them off or bringing them in a separate container. If there are no known allergies then go ahead and include them in the dish you’re making, but make sure that you label it.
5. Leafy green salads. The issue here is that there’s a lot of opportunity for cross-contamination. Plus this is usually the last picked item and often gets thrown out.
Here are a few ideas of ones that I have seen go over well at Pot Lucks:
