A controversy is brewing in Kincardine over the pending purchase of a CT Scanner for the hospital.
It’s Edge Plus versus the Drive.
The South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) board, last week (FEB 3) confirmed it is purchasing the less expensive Edge Plus CT scanner.
However, many doctors, community members and Kincardine council want “the Drive” which is more expensive and the same as the one at Walkerton Hospital.
At town council on Monday, February 8th, councillors passed a motion presented by councillor Maureen Couture calling on the town to spend $500,000 from health care reserves, on the purchase of a scanner BUT ONLY if it’s the Drive model.
The motion also calls for maintenance costs to be partially covered.
It’s hoped Huron-Kinloss will also share some costs since some of the population there uses the Kincardine services.
Last week, the President and CEO of SBGHC Michael Barrett said, in going with the less expensive model “We want to make sure we’re fiscally responsible in our decision but getting the best CT for the community.”
Councillor Dave Cuyler thinks otherwise as do the rest of council
Cuyler says he doesn’t under why the health centre board thinks it has a good reason for buying “the cheaper model.”
Barrett will be invited for the fourth time to address council on the issue, hopefully at February 17th’s meeting.
He has yet to accept an invitation according to Mayor Anne Eadie.
