Every so often it’s not a bad idea to update your resume, just in case!
If a great job opportunity presents itself you want to be ready!
There are certain things that may be on yours right now that, nowadays, shouldn’t be according to a career consultant:
1. Your Salary or Salary Requirements
This may come off a bit strong. Save the money conversation/request for the interview process.
2. “References Available Upon Request”
This is kind of just a space filler. They know they can ask and if they want to, they will.
3. Bright Colours or Fancy Graphics
Some may want to do this to make their resume stand out, but it may not make you look the most professional. Unless you’re applying for a job in a creative industry of course.
4. Your Full Home Address
No one needs to know your exact street address anymore. City and province? Yes. Postal Code? Nah!
5. The Word “Managed” or any word, repeatedly
Visit a Thesaurus website if you need to, but come up with some new verbs so as to not sound so repetitive.
6. A Third Page
Unless you’re applying to be the next Prime Minister, your résumé shouldn’t be three pages long. Two is max—keep it relevant and tight.
