Attainable and affordable housing in Saugeen Shores is needed in the community.
That need was addressed at the February 16th planning meeting.
A report from the Attainable Housing Task Force, the need was spelled out by the task force chair, Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt who says task force members learned of people with low to moderate income, are facing a bleak future when it comes to living accommodations.
Myatt says a new house is out of the question with the average price, according to the Grey Bruce Real Estate Board, tipping just over $600,000.
A year ago that housing price was just under $500,000.
Myatt says of the 600 or so people on a list for affordable housing, 300 of them live in Saugeen Shores.
He says it’s time to develop smaller or tiny homes along with apartments in the $700 to $1200 price range, versus $2,000 to $2,500 range to rent a 3-bedroom apartment.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau agrees saying they’re “falling behind, there hasn’t been enough,” referring to the housing issue.
The task force had several recommendations to get the ball rolling on the problem, possibly as early as the Fall.
