The fourth annual Putting Fore Paul Charity Golf Tournament, honouring Owen Sound firefighter Paul Materiuk, raised over $10,000 last weekend.
The event was hosted at Stone Tree Golf and Fitness on July 5th.
In addition to being a firefighter, Paul was also a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces and an avid outdoorsman. He unexpectedly passed away in 2021 at age 41.
All of the funds raised are being donated to the Owen Sound Animal Shelter.
Kathleen Materiuk, Co-organizer and sister of Paul says, “Every year we choose a charity that was close to Paul’s heart, he loved animals and his best friend was a chocolate lab Ash who was on site on Saturday which was wonderful.”
She added that this years event was their best turn out yet with 94 golfers registered.
“We always have a great turn out, other firefighters from the hall come out. Firefighters from surrounding areas come as well, this year we had quite a few teams sign up that didn’t even know Paul but heard his story and wanted to come out to support,” says Materiuk.
Materiuk hopes to make next year’s fifth annual event bigger and more successful.
“If you love golf come on out. If you’re not really a golfer but would still like to be a part of it, we always look for volunteers to help us around the course and we are always looking for prize donations whether it be for our raffles or our silent auction. Without those donations and those volunteers we really can’t successfully host the event so we do heavily rely on them,” says Materiuk.
