A regional firefighting training school will be opening soon in Walkerton.
Firefighters from Bruce and Grey Counties are invited to take advantage.
Up to now, firefighters had to take time off work and travel to the Gravenhurst Ontario Fire College Campus.
However that service has been discontinued.
Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody says they will be opening in September and over the first six months will be offering four different courses.
Peabody says this will not be in competition with the Bruce Power Fire Training School.
He says Bruce Power allows firefighters to take part in live fire training.
The Walkerton facility will be more practical and theory training.
A proposal for the new regional training centre was accepted by the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General.
Peabody says the cost isn’t known yet but it will be cost-neutral for the host community.
The selling point of training centre in Walkerton is that volunteer firefighters won’t have to take time off of work and won’t be away from their families for a week.
It’s expected the classes will be held at the Walkerton Fire Hall.
