The pet care app, Rover, has released their list for the top trending pet names in Canada.
Rover said that 45% of Canadian dog parents went with a name because they felt it suited their pet’s personality or appearance, and of the share that cited personality, 31% also pointed to an influence of entertainment — hence the popularity of the name of Eevee from Pokémon.
Meanwhile, 32% of Canadian cat parents said they were inspired by entertainment, while 19% cited breed, 19% cited classic human names, 16% cited humour, and 15% cited nature or space. Eddie and Marshmallow were the top names for boy and girl kittens, followed by Tony and Nimbus for boys and Bailey and Charlie for girls. (Fun fact: Kitten names that included ‘Mr.’ spiked 939% from last year’s report.)
Rover’s report also highlighted five more specific trends that are influencing pet-naming trends across Canada, including names honouring grandparents and babies, names drawing from action and adventure flicks, nature-inspired names, food-inspired names, and names paying homage to famous sports icons.
