The Owen Sound North Stars Legacy Ridge Golf Club JEWL women’s lacrosse team fell just short in their home opener Thursday night, dropping a 9-8 decision to the visiting Orillia Lady Kings.
Owen Sound had a strong opening quarter, controlling possession and scoring four times in the first 15 minutes. Camryn Laycock and Bree Wilkins each found the back of the net, while Taryn Weppler added a pair to give the North Stars a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Momentum shifted sharply before halftime. Orillia responded with three unanswered goals in the second quarter, tightening the score to 4-3 at the break and setting the stage for a tight second half.
The third quarter featured back and forth action, with Owen Sound edging the Lady Kings 3-2 thanks to goals from Avery Seaman, London Doyle, and Wilkins – who beat the buzzer with less than a second remaining – to put the home team up 7-5.
Doyle struck again early in the fourth to restore a three‑goal cushion at 8-5. From there, however, Orillia took control of the final nine minutes. The Lady Kings scored four straight goals, completing the comeback and handing the North Stars a tough one goal loss.
The defeat moves Owen Sound’s record to 1-1 on the season. The North Stars return to action next weekend with a pair of home games at the Owen Sound Soccer Complex, hosting the Halton Hills Bulldogs on Saturday and the Toronto Beaches on Sunday.
