With kids headed back to school in a month, now is a good time to start getting ready.
The average household spends between $750 and $800 on school supplies. For many, this is just not feasible, especially right now with the cost of day to day living going up constantly.
Here are some ways to make back to school less of a little easier:
- Shop Sales. Check around for deals, watch for store flyers and use apps like the FLIPP app which can help compare prices for stores in the area.
- Buy a few items at a time rather than doing one BIG shop. If you spread out the spending over a few weeks or months, it’s a lot gentler on your bank account.
- Before shopping, look at what they have from last year that is still usable. Their backpack, binders, water bottles are probably still in good shape and can be used again. Buying all new school supplies every single year is NOT mandatory.
- Thrift shop. Look for school stuff and clothing second hand. Saves money and is good for the environment.
- Get stuff for free from friends & family members. Ask around and see if they have items there kids no longer use or need that are still in good shape. They will probably be glad to get it out of their house since no one is using it.
- Contact local agencies like United Way Bruce Grey who run Backpack Campaigns. Call 211 to get on the list.
