It’s September 25th, a day that if written numerically says 9-2-5, which is why it’s been declared as “Dolly Day” in honour of her hit song “9 to 5” and movie of the same name.
The day is meant to celebrate things that Dolly cared about most: good songs, kids with books in their hands, and doing a little good for others in the community.
The goal for today is simple. Do something that makes a difference, whether that’s donating, volunteering, reading with a kid, or helping out someone in your community.
People everywhere are planning to mark it their own way, with reading events, fundraisers, parties and plenty of Dolly on the speakers.
In Nashville, the city has a full day planned, and at 5pm, the entire city will sing the same song.
Dolly Parton grew up the 4th of 12 kids in the foothills of the great smokey mountains. She had a career that spanned genres and decades. She passed away last month at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
Dolly’s Father never learned to read or write as he left school at a young age to work. It was something that he always felt bad about, embarrassed. In his honour, in 1995, Dolly created the Imagination Library. This program sends a free, brand-new book every month to kids from birth to age five, so they’re building a love of reading before they ever set foot in a classroom.
It began as a small program in her home community. Today it has given away more than 330 million books around the world, and it reaches families right here in Canada. You can find out more at imaginationlibrary.com/ca.
So today, Be Like Dolly. Be kind and go out of your way to help someone else without expecting anything in return and of course listen to all of your favourite Dolly songs!
