The Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services has cancelled its annual Home Visitation and Assistance Program due to Covid.
Having run for two decades, according to Owen Sound Fire Prevention Officer Greg Nicol, the program normally starting in may and continues through the summer months.
This year however, fire services are asking residents to check their homes to ensure working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are present and working on each level of their home which has a bedroom.
Nicol stated in the release to replace the batteries in alarms that do not work and, “carbon monoxide alarms that are greater than 10-years-old must be replaced.”
Establishing a fire drill with your family so each member of your household knows where to go when an alarm sounds is also recommended by Nicol.
According to Owen Sound Fire Services, smoke alarms are required on each level of your home and carbon monoxide alarms are needed in residential units that use fuel for heating or cooking.
If you find your alarms are not working or any members of your household are not physically capable to conduct a test, contact Owen Sound Fire Services at 519-376-2512 or email fire@owensound.ca to set an inspection or for more details.
