The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority is receiving $1,000 to support invasive species education and community action.
The $1,000 will go to Buckthorn Control at the Massie Hills Management Unit, in the Municipality of Meaford.
The Education and Community Action Microgrant Awards For Ontario are part of the Ontario Invasive Species Centre’s 10-Year Anniversary celebrations.
This funding also went to 23 other organizations across the province. Executive Director at the Invasive Species Centre Sarah Rang says, “we are pleased to support the exciting microgrant project work being completed this year to support prevention and management of invasive species.”
A media release notes the definition of an invasive species is an organism that causes ecological, economic, or social impacts in a new environment. It says invaders kill, crowd out and devastate native species and their ecosystems. It says globally, invasive species are the second most important threat to biodiversity after habitat loss.
The Invasive Species Centre says a recent study on the potential impacts of invasive species has a potential impact worth $3.6 billion on the agriculture, fisheries, forests, healthcare, tourism and recreation industries.
The Centre says, “work done at the community level is critical to protecting our lands and water from the impacts of invasive species.”
