The Saugeen Shores Accessibility Committee wants to make sure that all people can enjoy the beaches that this region has to offer.
In a presentation to a recent Committee of the Whole meeting on May 10th, accessibility chair Maureen Crawford says the committee has come a long way to help make the community more accessible.
She referred to the Stop Gap program where ramps were built to allow wheelchair access to various storefronts.
They’re also developing, with the Attainable Housing Committee, an ‘Attainable Housing Accessibility Guide’, which will assist developers when designing new attainable housing.
Looking down the road, the committee wants council to consider future budget allocations for waterproof wheelchairs, to allow users to go into the water at the beaches.
It would also seem fitting to eventually have one in each community.
The main obstacle for these chairs is the sign out process, and having a location for them to be stored at the beach.
Saugeen Shores Deputy Mayor Don Matheson most people take accessibility for granted, unless you or a family member face the challenges of inaccessibility.
He would like to see the municipality be inclusive to all by 2025.
