I’m just gonna say it, I really love thrift stores. You can find great deals, and every now and then – if you are super lucky – you can find a hidden gem.
That is exactly what happened to an unnamed shopper at who found an interesting looking painting at the Machar Mall donation center by a dump in Ontario last summer. The store was asking for a whopping $5 for the 8×10 abstract portrait. At the time, the shopper knew nothing about this painting, but still couldn’t pass it up at the low price point.
Now it seems that after a year and a little bit of research the unnamed person is now looking at a huge profit, because this $5 painting was done by none other than Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) himself. This painting was one of 47 portraits that Bowie painted in between ’95 and ’97 as part of his “Dead Heads” collection.
The painting is currently up for auction by Cowley Abbott Fine Art in Toronto through June 24. It was estimated to fetch between $9,000-12,000 but currently has a top bid of $18,100.
If you’re a Bowie fan and want a nice centre-piece above the mantle (not to mention $20k to burn) this could be exactly what you’re looking for!
