Over $800,000 in combined funding is coming to municipal and county governments in Bruce and Grey counties to support local energy efficiency and water treatment projects.
A total of $1.2 million is being invested in several southwestern Ontario communities through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Green Municipal Fund (GMF). Brockton, Georgian Bluffs and Bruce County are among those.
Brockton will receive $598,000 to upgrade its aging wastewater treatment facility. This will include the replacement of the existing chlorination system with a chemical-free, ultraviolet-light disinfection system. It’s expected to lower operating and maintenance costs.
Bruce County will receive over $148,000 to complete a study on technical and financial requirements needed for using the surplus electricity it generates to produce and store hydrogen in the region. The study will also look at the possibility of this for not only the region’s economy, but eventually for the province and country.
The Township of Georgian Bluffs will also be receiving almost $72,000 to analyze the opportunities in retrofitting as well as upgrading and anaerobic digester at the Derby Wastewater Treatment Plant, in an effort to increase onsite renewable energy generation, alter waste from landfills and create soil fertilizer. Both will add to the performance of the facility and lessen its operating costs.
