It should look something like this (picture not mine, from food.com)
I’m sharing this with you on St. Patrick’s Day, but you can make this super easy bread any time. It’s delicious and takes very little work! No kneading, rising, etc etc – it just takes a little while to bake.
Start by firing up your oven to 375 F. For ingredients, you’ll need:
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour – make sure you SIFT it! or else you’ll end up with a really dense bread
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar (some people do more – you can try that if you want but I like it this way)
- 1 beer (12 oz = small can) – a lager is probably best, but you can try other beers like a brown ale to get slightly different flavours
Mix all of the above ingredients together. Don’t mix them too hard – or else you’ll end up with a loaf of concrete. just stir it enough to get everything mixed and wet with the beer.
Grease up a bread loaf pan with butter, pour in your mixture, and toss it in your hot oven for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, melt some butter – 3-4 tablespoons (about 1/4 cup) is a good amount. Take the bread out after 10 minutes, and pour the butter all over the top of the bread. Don’t worry if it seems like a lot of butter, it will soak in a bit and also work its way down the sides to give you a tasty and crisp crust.
Back in the oven and bake for another 45-50 minutes. Now you can clean up the mess you made and/or drink a beer. When it’s done, the top should be brown but not super dark.
Let it cool for a few minutes (if you can hold off that long) and bam, you’ve got beer bread. It’s best eaten fresh, but does keep for a few days just fine (but you probably won’t have any left for the next day anyway).
If you try it and like it, let me know!
