At one point or another, I’m sure someone has handed you some money intended for a purpose…and then you spent it on something completely different.
Maybe the insurance company gave you $2000 to fix your bumper? Boom – new big screen TV.
Maybe your Grandpa gave you $500 for college? Boom – just got enrolled at the Beer Store.
The small town of Noto, Japan was recently given a large sum of money by the Japanese government intended for Covid-relief.
While the town did allocate most of the $7-million+ towards its intended purpose, it also chose to invest…in a giant squid.

Total squid expense: about $230,000 US
Obviously, the move has had its share of critics. Covid remains a major issue in Japan (the country is reporting about as many daily new cases as the province of Ontario).
Regardless, town officials are going with the classic “it doesn’t cost money…it MAKES money” argument, saying they hope the giant squid will attract tourists.
Plus the kids seem to have a great time climbing all over it!
Now if Noto is looking to get in to a giant roadside attraction war, I’m pretty sure our Bruce makes calamari out of their squid.
